Back in November 2022, Kylie Jenner was sighted with a mysterious asymmetrical bag, also known as the Fearless bag, from emerging brand, AUPEN. Since then, AUPEN has recently been the latest celebrity favourite, pictured on Gal Gadot at the Barbie Movie world premiere, Gabrielle Union, Nina Dobrev, Dakota Johnson and Hailey Bieber. Starting from USD 180, AUPEN bags are made from animal-free, recycled textiles. When I received the bag in person, my colleagues and I could not believe that it was not leather – the texture was of a quality exactly like fine cow leather, and the finishing and stitching of the bag was really well done comparable to brands like Loewe and Celine.

While celebrity sightings create hype around a bag, let alone an emerging new brand, not every bag fits everyone. I was curious to find out more about AUPEN. On AUPEN’s website, I found myself delighted to see styles that I had never seen before, all bearing the asymmetrical DNA of the brand.
The structural Purpose was my first choice considering it is the hot celebrity favourite later worn by Gal Gadot, Hailey Bieber, Dakota Johnson and Nina Dobrev.

Measuring at 20cm (W) x 13cm (H) x 5cm (D), similar size to Fendi’s mini baguette, I was surprised that the seemingly irregular size of Purpose was able to fit my iPhone Pro Max and my keys, and its internal pocket held my essential cards. I was able to carry all my main essentials in the bag, and its lightweight nature and flap closure made sure that all my things were secure. The bag is useful for me when running quick errands, attending meetings or events. One thing I wish was that the bag had an external compartment where I could easily access my cards without opening the flap.
For the quick everyday outing or errand, while its sleek minimal triangle design elevated my casual fits, it is however unfortunate that it does not come with a cross body strap. I also wished the bag was able to stand stably on its own as I placed it down.
I understand why Gal Gadot wore it down the red carpet at the recent Barbie launch and why Hailey Bieber paired it with her slinky dress for her evening launch party - it is the essential bag that will elevate any outfit.
Besides the Purpose, I was interested to discover other bags of AUPEN and opted for the Nirvana in Noir Black. The bag once came in two sold out limited colors – Matcha Green and Sky Blue, so I bought the black one as it felt timeless and could match with any outfit. A less rigid and softer bag type, measuring at 22cm (W) x 9cm (H) x 6cm (D), Nirvana’s size is similar to Prada’s Nylon Re-edition bag. Nirvana was able to fit what Purpose could not, it could fit the same iPhone Pro Max and essential cards, but also fits a small umbrella, wallet and small notepad.
Nirvana was the bag I brought mostly to work, and it would have been perfect, if only it could fit a laptop. It was also able to stand on its own, adding a sculptural visual quality to my desk. The con I would say is that the braided strap is not adjustable, and the bag also lacked a cross body strap.
After using both AUPEN bags for a few weeks, I can safely say that the bags were of extremely good quality, durable, and resistant to scratches. The bags were also resistant to stains, and I was able to easily clean the bags with a wipe. Regardless of the many future celebrities that continue to spark interest in AUPEN, I’ll have my eyes on this emerging brand that proves to be a worthy stylish companion.
