From the eye-catching Nirvana bag to the sleek Fearless bag, Vogue Singapore's fashion features editor delves into her favourite pieces from accessories brand, AUPEN
I’m a big believer that when it comes to the finishing touch of an outfit, nothing is more important than the bag you choose to carry. Maybe it’s a functional tote that will take you through your work days in style. Perhaps it’s a sleek top handle for a fashion-forward Sunday brunch. Or better yet, a perennial slingbag for a night out on the town. If you’re anything like me, you might already be paying close attention to some of the buzziest bag trends on the runways for inspiration. While metallic pouches and larger-than-life duffels have made a case for themselves, there’s one style in particular that’s captured my eye: the asymmetrical bag. And with accessories brand AUPEN's selections, the search for a versatile iteration has been seamless.

Spotted on the likes of It girls Taylor Swift, Kylie Jenner and Jennifer Lawrence, AUPEN has quickly become a brand-to-know. In just a few short years, this Brooklyn and Singapore-based design studio—which focuses on innovation—has been toted by the biggest names in the business, lauded for its chic designs and easy-to-style sensibility. The brand has a large selection of shoulder bags in particular. Given that the shoulder bag is a popular and incredibly seamless style, I decided to give three of AUPEN’s star pieces a whirl.
The Nirvana bag is buttery soft and comes with intricate detailing, from a braided handle to gold hardware.

First up (and my favourite) is The Nirvana bag. Undoubtedly popularised by Taylor Swift—on her first date night with beau Travis Kelce—this iteration is one of AUPEN’s most recognisable pieces. An easy blend of timelinessness and trendiness, this stood out to me immediately because of its make. The Nirvana is buttery soft to the touch. Though compact, this makes it roomy and slightly expandable—making way for my bigger daily essentials from a bulky portable charger to a fully stocked make up pouch. Some of my favourite detailing? The bag’s braided handle as well as its gold charm, giving an otherwise simple black accessory a touch of edge. Available in pink, orange and white (amongst other colours) the options are endless.
Sleek and compact, AUPEN’s Fearless Re-Edition bag is the ideal accessory for the minimalist at heart.

Next, I tried the Fearless Re-Edition bag. This ergonomic bag is definitely a option if you’re one for sleek, minimalist accessories. The overall design is incredibly discreet, making it easy to pair with just about everything. It also comes without any hardware or extraneous detailing. Sturdy and structured, you can expect a design with less give which has its pros and cons. With its compact make, the bag sits comfortably under your arm without any bulging, which also lends to a clean appearance. This does contribute to a stiff feel and compared to the Nirvana bag, offers less space for your everyday items. It also comes with an equally structured strap which sits a little less comfortably on your shoulder. However, if you’re looking to emulate the quiet luxury trend that’s everywhere at the moment, I think this is a great piece to start with. Tote this from the office to dinner in style.

Finally, we have the Purpose purse. Armed with a sharp and geometric design, this piece lends to the elevated basics trend. While the Nirvana and Fearless bags felt more weighty and luxurious to the touch, the Purpose purse is certainly a fuss-free and “essentials-only” piece which is incredibly fashionable in and of itself. I personally found this model a tad too small and lightweight for my personal use. It also comes with a thinner adjustable strap for a handle which is great, but does not hold as well as compared to a thicker strap. That being said, its make is exactly why it is perfect for a night out. It could accomodate my phone, important cards, keys and two lipsticks, all of which remained secure because of its sturdy strap. Beyond that, it’s seasonless and versatile and a great addition to any capsule wardrobe. I love the black version but opt for the white colourway if you’re in the market for a lighter staple. Ring in the new year effortlessly with this party piece.
